Dentists typically recommend brushing your teeth twice daily and flossing at least once, but sometimes even the most orally diligent of people can’t keep their teeth looking flawless. Teeth can become discolored for many reasons, including too much coffee or wine, or naturally grow out of alignment.
There are many options to help your smile become brighter, straighter and fuller. Some options are more conservative, while others are more drastic. One of the more conservative options that can make a significant difference is getting veneers. They are carefully crafted pieces of porcelain that are cemented onto the current teeth. Here are six reasons people consider getting veneers:
1. They’re stain resistant.
Veneers are made of porcelain, which is harder to stain than the original enamel of your teeth. When combined with brushing regularly and dental checkups, veneers can keep your smile bright for as long as their lifetime. Even though they’re stain resistant, dentists may recommend avoiding stain-inducing foods and drinks such as coffee and wine.
2. They can fill gaps.
Veneers can be created and molded into any shape, so instead of the long, arduous process of getting braces or other orthodontic work, veneers can quickly reshape your teeth and close those gaps. The downside is that larger gaps require more veneers, and they’re most effective with teeth that are visible.
3. They have more natural tooth-like colors.
Natural teeth have a translucence to them that can be replicated by the thinness of veneers. The translucency is an especially important characteristic when using a veneer to correct one tooth. It allows lab technicians to match patients’ current tooth color, but if done on multiple teeth, the lab technician can create something a bit whiter to enhance their patients’ smiles.
4. Sometimes bleaching isn’t an option.
Not everyone is a good candidate for normal teeth whitening procedures. Some circumstances where whitening procedures might not work include age, pregnancy, worn enamel, cavities, gum disease, and existing restorations like composites, fillings and crowns. For these patients, veneers are a good way for them to change their smiles.
5. Veneers can provide immediate results.
Appointments for a veneer can be as short as a few hours, depending on the number of veneers you need. The dentist may need a few appointments to get an impression of your teeth, prepare your teeth, and deliver your veneers. You will, however, see an instant change in your smile once they are attached – much quicker results than some whitening and straightening processes.
6. Veneers can help you be more confident with your smile.
A good smile is important to your self-image. Having whiter, straighter teeth gives us one less thing to worry about when it comes to our appearance, and a great smile is very important in first impressions. Whether it’s a first date or first interview, veneers can help you walk in with more confidence – and a higher chance of success.
