In today’s post I’d like to share a personal story from our practice this year and offer you some advice when choosing the dental implant facility that places your new teeth. Recently, a patient came to our office to have our office correct a dental implant procedure he had received at a different practice. When we saw the work, we quickly knew that we could correct the problems he was experiencing.
However, when we reviewed his records we quickly saw that the other practice had not required him to have a medical evaluation prior to surgery. It is our policy that before we bring a patient into surgery, they have a thorough medical evaluation. This is solely for the safety and well-being of each of our patients. We requested that he have the evaluation done before we could work on his teeth. He agreed and sadly, when he returned he reported that they had found that he had leukemia. We were shocked. This wonderful man had undergone a serious surgery at the other practice with leukemia and the other practice didn’t do the due-diligence to make sure they were properly caring for the life of their patient. We did not move forward with his dental implants at that point, as the risks were too great. He is currently undergoing treatment and we all wish him the absolute best and a full recovery.
Through this experience, I wanted to send out a personal note. When choosing the surgeon that conducts your dental surgery, never underestimate the value of a thorough medical evaluation. No matter where you choose to have your dental surgery conducted, if the doctor isn’t requiring that you have a full medical evaluation at the onset, they may not have your best interests at heart. First and foremost your health and safety should always be the primary focus of any doctor.
